My Favourite Wedding of 2020

Now there’s a blog title I never thought I’d be writing.  Publicly announcing a wedding as your favourite isn’t the done thing in this industry, privately to the couple is fine (as long as you don’t say it to every couple….that’s just plain wrong :-). It’s like telling one of your children, “your my favourite” by saying those words you are in danger of upsetting and alienating all the other wonderful couples who decided to share their special day with you.

So how do I sum up 2020? I could say something like, “it’s been a year like no other” and while factually correct, that really doesn’t cut it. Sure, it’s been tough financially and mentally but with so many people losing loved ones, any troubles I may have had are just not worth mentioning.

As I write this, the first vaccine has been administered and Christmas will soon be here. Its a time to look forward, a time for loving the people close to you and most of all appreciating what you have.

So my favourite wedding of 2020 was infact my ONLY wedding of 2020. October this year, Manchester had just been put into Tier 3 on the Thursday and the wedding was Saturday…in Manchester City Centre.

Lucy & Martin had planned to get married back in May and when Covid hit they were the only couple who didn’t immediately cancel, they were different, they wanted to get married and nothing was going to stop them. Even a week before the wedding Martin was still determined to get it over the line, exploring every possible avenue but unfortunately when the venue closed it had to be postponed.   They had insurance but as is usually the way they didn’t pay out and they were left £1000’s out of pocket. Add to that the news Lucy received about her fathers health and you would have forgiven them for putting everything on hold and just concentrating on getting through this tough time together.

So fast forward to October and I remember being so nervous in the morning, I’m usually more excited than nervous the morning of a wedding but I think the fact it had been 10 months since my last wedding I was doubting myself, stuff like, “can I still do this” “what happens if…” 15 years doing the job yet I was feeling like this was my first ever wedding.  Thankfully the challenges I expected never materialised, It helped working alongside Photographer James Jebson who was a real top bloke and a pleasure work with.

One thing that really came across was just how much Lucy & Martin actually wanted to get married and I really enjoyed expressing that with the edit. So what did I learn from my first ‘lock-down’ wedding? There is nothing to blur or mask the feelings and emotions, its very raw, its real and its what I Iove about this film and this wonderful couple.

Love you guys x
